Well, I may have been wrong, the way brltty was configured was
covici at John-Covicis-MacBook-Pro:~ % ls -lh /opt/local/bin/brltty
-rwsr-xr-x  1 root  wheel   853K Sep  3  2017 /opt/local/bin/brltty

So, as you can brltty did run as root, but I don't know whether that
will work anymore, I will have to try  later today.
